Selectmen order “that no person shall henceforth dig up the Ground in any of the Streets, Lanes or High-ways in the Town, for the laying or repairing any Drain, without the leave or approbation of two or more of the Selectmen.” Another law requires privies to be located more than 12 feet from a road and dug to a depth of at least 6 feet.
